Jerry Heller Aticle – Steelo Magazine

In my opinion, Mr. Heller doesn’t get the credit that he deserves. Well, its not like he cares, to be honest. Every time I’ve heard of Jerry they always make reference to “Chin Check” by N.W.A where they say “so fuck Jerry Heller and the white super power”. He’s always being portrayed as the bad guy, but the fact of the matter is this, you have to respect the man for what he did. He pretty much pioneered the way for west coast gangster rap. When him and Eazy joined forces they were a force that couldn’t be reckoned with. Eazy had the street knowledge and Heller was a straight businessman. With their introduction of N.W.A they paved the way with a sound so unique that couldn’t be matched. In a time where injustice and crime was at an all time high within the black community, NWA became the voice of those issues. They came out with such aggression and knowledgeable tunes that could not be touched.
They spoke about poverty, gangs, violence, police corruption and everything else everyone else was afraid to speak on. Mr. Heller had pushed vocal gold!!

NWA 1The man was no stranger to recognizing talent. In the 60’s and 70’she had risen to prominence by introducing acts and managing people like; Elton John, CCR, Pink Floyd, The Who, Otis Redding, Black Sabbath and many more.

In the 80’s however, he leaned more to the R&B and hip hop scenes where he generated many deals with Michel’le, The D.O.C, World Class Wrecking Crew, Egyptian Lover and L.A Dream Team. But, the real movement was with Ruthless Records and Co-Founder Eazy-E. Together they opened the way for acts like NWA, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Blackeyed Peas, Above the Law and others. On average they were making about $10 million dollars a month!

Heller was and continues to be a business genius! At the time all this was coming together they started catching heat. Slowly but surely N.W.A started breaking apart, Suge Knight emerged as threat and when asked if Eazy wanted to take him out Heller simply responded with a yeah, but he managed to talk Eazy out of it because they were doing too good to focus on a petty character such as Suge. We asked him about the falling out of NWA and he simply stated he and Eazy were NWA! Of course, he didn’t take away credit from those who deserved it and stated this, “Dre and I are not the best of friends but the man is talented”. He gave credit where it was due and when on to say that Dre as well played a role in the pioneering of west coast music, but he’s also a real blunt man. When asked if the parting of Ice Cube from the group had any real effect he simply said no.

Out of respect we strayed away from asking questions in regards to Eazy’s passing because of the tight knit friendship they had. As the interview proceeded we asked about his memoir, “Ruthless” which was published in 2006. It Started of well and continues to do so, in sales! It covers the history that not many were aware of during and after the Ruthless era.

We also discussed his latest projects and how he’s now focused on the Latin community. He manages Calle 13 and others. “The Latin Market is getting bigger and bigger everyday. With so many numbers and talent, it’s where its at. It’s the Latinos turn in this industry”.

When asked if considering how great the Latin market is, if he would consider ever writing a memoir about the Latin talent he responded, “If I live that long, yes!”. Most people tend talk down about Mr. Heller and blame him for the separation of super group, N.W.A but the fact of the matter is he don’t give a fuck. These are just opinions based on biased statements but just as he did we gotta give credit where its due.
